The question of location gained a new dimension in July 1998 with the offer of a donation by the Müller family: Suddenly, a new building at Schöngrün, on the outskirts of Bern, was within reach.
The offer
To donate capital for the construction of the Zentrum Paul Klee.
To donate two plots of land for the construction of the Zentrum Paul Klee.
To set up the private Maurice E. and Martha Müller Foundation to build the Zentrum Paul Klee.
The donations
The donations by the Müller family were – and still are – subject to three conditions, specifically:
That the location be the Schöngrün district of Bern, i.e. the area of the city where Paul Klee’s final resting place is located.
That the construction be entrusted to the internationally acclaimed architect and friend of the Müller family, Renzo Piano.
That the new home for all the collections and works by Paul Klee and his artist friends in public ownership in Bern should not be a museum in the traditional sense but a cultural centre for people of all ages.
With their generous offer of a donation to the Public Sector Prof. Maurice E. and Martha Müller-Lüthi have made it possible not only to expand the planned Paul Klee Museum into a cultural, scientific and research centre but also to build new premises in the Schöngrün district of the City of Bern.
As a founder family the Müllers have shown unrivalled generosity and considerable personal commitment in their promotion of the project to ensure that their vision of a venue of artistic, scientific and educational engagement with Paul Klee becomes reality.
