“I cannot ever remember a gift like this before. It is unbelievable that what we sometimes hear about from other cantons should also be happening here in Bern. This does not mean the thinking phase is over; rather it enables us to continue evaluating all the possible sites. It is crucial that we fully consider both dossiers together when making the political decision as to a definitive site. It would be wrong to drop all the investigations we have been making at this point.” Member of the Cantonal Government Dr Hans Lauri, Chairman of the Gesamtprojektausschuss Klee [Overall Project Committee], to Der Bund, 8 July 1998.
“Maurice E. Müller’s vision for Bern is a grand one: it transcends local, cantonal and national boundaries in that it sees the cultural legacy, the work of Paul Klee as belonging to the world. For him it goes without saying that the Museum should include a research side and a Klee Institute or Klee Academy.” Der Bund, 8 July 1998.
“The best thing about the Müllers’ offer is that the Klee Museum will not have to be housed in that dreadful schoolhouse building, the old Progymnasium. It will have a new building of its own. Nor is the fact that, under the terms of the gift, this building will be on the Schöngrün site and not in the city centre a bad thing either. The often depressing cramped confines of Bern, with no room to breathe, its narrow streets edged with geraniums and sandstone facades, the hallmarks of “Old Bern”, needs breaking up now and then. Bern has more to offer than a motorway bulwark and cobbled old town streets; and we can show them to the tourists who come to Bern because of Klee. The city centre sites proposed near the Art Museum can still be used for the museum of contemporary art.“ Die Hauptstadt, 15 July 1998.
