The façade

Intricate design
One consequence of the building’s unusual geometry is the intricate design used for the 150 metre long glass façade. The façade is divided into an upper and lower section along its entire length. The two façade sections are marginally offset and connected by the canopy (the roof of the Museum Street) at a height of 4 metres above the level of the ground floor. The glass façade measures 19 metres at its highest points, and the largest panes of glass weigh almost half a metric ton and measure 6 x 1.6 metres.

Innovative load-bearing system
A steel roof of this size is subject to considerable thermally induced movement, which is why it is crucial that the façade structure be able to track the temperature-related movement of the main roof without causing additional forces to be exerted on the individual façade elements. The innovative load-bearing system used for the Zentrum Paul Klee allows the façade to be suspended, and the substantial loads from the façade and high wind forces to be transmitted to the flexible arched roof without damage.
