("Crossing Point of Yesterday’s Todays" or "Between Over Here and Over There".)
Premiere of the composition commissioned by the Zentrum Paul Klee.
Simon Hostettler is a musician who defies all stylistic restrictions, experimenting over many years with a wide variety of styles. He has made a name for himself in Switzerland and abroad as a freelance composer for the stage, free theatre groups and contemporary compositions.
The composer writes about his play:
The text material is made up of poems and quotations by – and biographical material on – Paul Klee. The piece begins in Klee’s youth and ends after his death. The choir and soloists perform the poems arranged and scored as songs. Narrators recite selected passages relating to milestones in Paul Klee’s life, and quote his thoughts and reflections on time and art. Here the choir is used purely as an orchestra.
As a tonal element the songs and poems refer to the world of Klee’s emotions. The instrumental part is an attempt at finding a more abstract interpretation and language in musical terms, inspired by Klee’s painting and drawing techniques. Musical fragments are broken up, strung together or overlaid. These "miniatures" are also to be seen as a dramatic element designed to break up the tonal structure of songs and storytelling.
