Matthias Schranz was born in Bern, and studied cello in Basel under Thomas Demenga and in the master class of Reinhard Latzko. He completed his studies with his concert diploma in 2001. He now regularly travels throughout Switzerland and Europe performing chamber music and solo concerts.

His interests in music are wide and varied, and include the in-depth study of improvisation and a cappella singing; he is also the lead singer, guitarist and composer of the rock band Disciples, which has now made a name for itself across Europe and has released two CDs under his leadership.
